Department of Government Efficiency leader Elon Musk paid a secret visit to the National Security Agency, where the talks reportedly involved staff reductions and operations, according to current and former U.S. officials.
The meeting came a week after Musk said the NSA needs an overhaul. It is his first known visit to be made to an intelligence agency, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
One official described the talks as a "positive" conversation.
Another official said it was not known if Musk asked about specific military or intelligence operations during his visit Wednesday, a day before the deadline given for federal agencies to turn in their plans for reorganization.
An NSA spokesperson confirmed that Musk met with NSA Director and U.S. Air Force Gen. Timothy Haugh, but DOGE didn't confirm the meeting.
The NSA's headquarters are in Fort Meade, Maryland.
Musk, when calling on X last week for an agency overhaul, did not specify what reforms he was seeking.
His visit to the NSA further showed the role he is playing in the Trump administration, despite calling himself "tech support" during a cabinet meeting last month.
Haugh also leads U.S. Cyber Command, which comes under the Defense Department umbrella and is also located at Fort Meade.
Musk has said that one of the main missions of DOGE is to improve the government's computer systems, calling them "extremely old" and unable to communicate.
"There are a lot of mistakes in the systems," he told Trump's cabinet. "The software doesn't work."
But DOGE's most visible changes have come as a large-scale, swift reduction in federal workers, including closing the U.S. Agency for International Development.
