Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on Monday promised that if she wins the 2020 presidential election, she will appoint someone who has worked as a public school teacher as Secretary of Education.
In a video posted to Twitter Monday morning, Warren says, “Betsy DeVos is a terrible Secretary of Education, but that shouldn’t be any surprise. She doesn’t really believe in public education. In a Warren administration, we'll have a secretary of Education who is committed to public education. In fact, I'll double down on that: I will only appoint for Secretary of Education someone who has been a public school teacher.”
“Let’s get a person with real teaching experience,” Warren wrote in a statement emailed to supporters, according to BuzzFeed News.
“A person who understands how low pay, tattered textbooks, and crumbling classrooms hurt students and educators. A person who understands the crushing burden of student debt on students and young professionals and who is committed to actually doing something about it.”
The senator added that DeVos, “is the worst Secretary of Education we’ve seen. She and her team are up to their eyeballs in conflicts of interest. Instead of championing our students, they protect for-profit colleges that break the law and cheat them.”
