Charleston Shooting Suspect Dylann Roof Enters Not Guilty Plea

Friday, 31 July 2015 12:04 PM EDT

The white man charged in the shooting of nine African Americans at a South Carolina church entered a "temporary" not guilty plea on Friday to federal hate crime charges in connection to the shooting.

A U.S. federal magistrate accepted the plea at a hearing in Charleston after the lead attorney for Dylann Roof, 21, said he could not advise his client to plead guilty, as he wanted to do, until prosecutors declared whether they would seek the death penalty if the suspect was convicted.
