A 66 percent majority of Americans oppose drone strikes against suspected terrorists living on American soil, while 79 percent oppose their use against U.S. citizens suspected of being terrorists, according to a new
Gallup poll.
At the same time, the telephone survey of 1,020 respondents conducted March 20-21 found that 52 percent also oppose drone strikes abroad when directed at Americans suspected of being terrorists.
But that view changes dramatically when respondents are asked about strikes against suspected terrorists in other countries, with 65 percent of respondents saying they support them.
The survey also found that Republicans tend to be more supportive of all forms of drone strikes compared to Democrats and independents.
“Although it was Republican Sen. Rand Paul . . . who filibustered in protest of the potential or possible future use of drones in the U.S., rank-and-file Republicans across the country are actually more supportive of such actions than are independents or Democrats,” Gallup’s Alyssa Brown and Frank Newport wrote in a poll summary.
