President Donald Trump's rhetoric towards North Korea could lead to "devastating consequences, not only for North Korea, but for the whole of human civilization," according to a top Russian senator, Newsweek reports.

"The opening of Pandora's box will make the inconceivable become conceivable," warned Russian Senator Franz Klintsevich in a statement in parliament's official newspaper.

Trump recently tweeted that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "won't be around much longer," after delivering a speech to the United Nations in which he called the country's supreme leader "rocket man."

Klintsevich, also the deputy head of the Defense and Security Committee, told state news source RIA Novosti, "It would not be amiss to warn the U.S. that any attempt to start a war in unprecedented proximity to Russia's borders, threatens her safety and will then be evaluated by us as openly adversarial actions with regards to our country bringing all consequences that come with that."
