President Donald Trump has a new nickname for Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas: "Beautiful Ted."
Trump took questions from the White House press corps before departing for a joint Trump-Cruz rally in Houston Monday afternoon. He was asked about his old moniker for the Texas lawmaker, "Lyin' Ted," and Cruz's opponent's recent use of it on the campaign trail.
"He's not 'Lyin' Ted anymore. He's 'beautiful Ted,'" Trump said. "I call him 'Texas Ted.' Ted Cruz and I had a very, very nasty and tough campaign [for president in 2016]. It was a very competitive, it was a very tough campaign."
Trump added that he and Cruz patched things up after the former became the Republican Party's presidential nominee.
"We have worked together very closely," Trump said. "I like him a lot. He is a very smart guy, he loves the people of Texas, which I do."
