President Donald Trump says he has "no intention" of ending special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign — a probe he has slammed as a "witch hunt."
In an interview posted Tuesday by The Washington Post, Trump lamented the investigation "is what it is. It just goes on and on and on."
"This question has been asked about me now for almost two years," he said about making a commitment to allow the investigation to go on until its end.
"And, in the meantime, he's still there," he continued. "He wouldn't have to be, but he's still there, so I have no intention of doing anything."
Trump''s firing this month of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and designation of Matthew Whitaker as acting AG raised concerns about the future of the Mueller probe.
But Trump told the Post he believes Whitaker — who has criticized the investigation in the past — will "do what's right" when faced with decisions about the special counsel.
Trump's lawyers submitted written answers last week to questions from Mueller's team; it is not expected he will sit down for an in-person interview.
