On Monday a super PAC that supports former President Donald Trump chided his Republican rival, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, for her past comments on immigration, The Hill reported.
In a video released by Make America Great Again Inc., a narrator says: "Drug traffickers. Rapists. Poisoning our country. But Nikki Haley refused to call illegals 'criminals.'"
The clip then shows Haley at an event in 2015, before she was chosen by Trump to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, where she said at the time that it was "disrespectful to describe immigrants who illegally crossed the border as 'criminals.'"
"Having said that, we are a country of immigrants," Haley said then. "I am the proud daughter of Indian parents who reminded us every day how blessed we are to live in this country. They resent when people come here illegally.
"But let's keep in mind, these people who are wanting to come here, they're wanting to come for a better life, too. They have kids, too. They have a heart, too, so we don't need to be disrespectful. We don't need to talk about them as criminals. They're not. They're families that want a better life and they're desperate to get here."
The ad released on Monday also claims that Haley is against building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that she is "Too weak — too liberal — to fix the border."
A spokesperson for Haley's campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment.
