President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Truth Social, calling him the "governor" of the "Great State of Canada."
"It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada," Trump wrote. "I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on tariffs and trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!"
The post came after Trudeau criticized Trump for threatening to put 25% tariffs on all goods from Canada, with the prime minster saying at an appearance before the Halifax Chamber of Commerce on Monday that Americans "are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive," the Associated Press reported.
Canada is already looking into possible retaliatory tariffs on selected items from the U.S. if Trump follows through on his threat.
Trudeau this month visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida to discuss the issue, a meeting that both leaders said was "productive."
At that meeting, according to reports, Trump told the prime minster that if Canada had problems with the tariffs, then it should become the 51st U.S. state and that Trudeau could be its governor.
A few days later, Trump posted on Truth Social an apparently AI-generated image of himself with the Canadian flag and a caption that read, "Oh Canada!"
Trump again brought up the subject Sunday in an interview, telling NBC News that if the U.S. is going to have lopsided trade deficits with Canada, it might as well become a state.
