A federal district judge ruled Wednesday that the Department of Justice must unseal more of its search warrant affidavit on former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence.
However, Magistrate Judge Bruce E. Reinhart of the Southern District of Florida also denied in his three-page order a motion from corporate media organizations to completely unseal the affidavit.
"After reviewing the media's Motion and the Government's Response, I find that additional portions of the search warrant affidavit should be unsealed, but that the entire affidavit should not be unsealed," Reinhart wrote.
"I further find that the Government has met its burden of showing that its proposed redactions of the affidavit are narrowly tailored to serve the Government's legitimate interests and are the least onerous alternative to sealing the entire search warrant affidavit," he added.
Reinhart gave the DOJ until 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on July 13 to appeal the decision.
It would be the third time the search warrant affidavit has been released, and the second time redactions have been taken away after last year's initial release provided little details on the operation.
The FBI raid at the behest of Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed numerous sensitive files used against Trump for his eventual indictment by a federal grand jury in Miami, Florida, last month.
DOJ special counsel John L. Smith headed the investigation of the documents and other scandals involving the former president before recommending 37 felony counts to the grand jury.
Trump was arraigned on June 13 and has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include accusations that he violated the Espionage Act and conspired to obstruct justice.
On Wednesday, he called for his supporters to oppose the charges vocally, accusing the Biden administration of weaponizing law enforcement and engaging in "massive prosecutorial misconduct."
"Do the people of this once great nation even have a choice but to protest the potential doom of the United States of America??? 2024!!!" Trump said in all caps on Truth Social, his social media platform.
