President Donald Trump tweeted Friday he was putting a decision "on hold" that would allow trophies from legally hunted elephants to be brought into the U.S.
Trump tweeted:
The Trump administration announced Wednesday they were lifting the ban on elephant trophies that had been put in place under former President Barack Obama.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service claims hunting elephants in Zimbabwe and Zambia would "enhance the survival of the species in the wild," although African elephants are "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.
Trump suggested he would seek counsel with Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, which oversees the protection of endangered species.
