Sportscasting legend Dick Vitale announced Wednesday on social media that he is cancer free.
''Dr Rick Brown just notified me with my results of my major Pet Scan & told me news I wish EVERY cancer patient can hear,'' Vitale posted on Twitter. ''He said 'Dick u have gone from being in remission to being CANCER FREE.'''
Vitale thanked everyone who had sent him prayers of support.
The ESPN analyst of four-plus decades was diagnosed with lymphoma nine months ago. He is 83.
Known for his trademark phrase ''Awesome, baby!'' Vitale was a high school, college and NBA coach before joining the fledgling ESPN in 1979 intending it to be a temporary position until another coaching job came along.
''Let’s face it is a moment that can be life changing when that phone call comes with the report,'' Vitale wrote on Facebook on Thursday. ''If cancer cells are still active & tumors are found it is back to chemotherapy and the battle rages on.
''I realize as do many that the journey never ever ends as one Mom Melissa Wiggins told me whose 11 year old son is fighting Neuroblastoma that it is a Life Sentence,'' he added. ''I will continue to follow the advice of Dr Brown & keep having a positive mental attitude with a strong faith & belief that good things will happen.''
