A top aide and spokesman to Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan is resigning because of growing tensions between DHS and the White House in part over what the Trump administration views as the botched rollout of a proposal to reverse the Flores Settlement Agreement, reports Axios.
Andrew Meehan reportedly made the decision to "leave government a couple of weeks ago," a DHS official told the news outlet.
The Flores Settlement Agreement limits how long the U.S. government can detain minors with their parents.
McAleenan missed an opportunity to announce it at a location that would have drawn more attention.
"[McAleenan] could have been on all the TVs if he wanted to. But not everybody's taking live coverage from the Reagan Center at the last minute. At some point something has got to go right at DHS with their messaging and rollouts," a senior official told Axios.
Additionally, Trump is reportedly suspicious of McAleenan, who served in the Obama administration from 2014-2017.
