Democrats will see President Donald Trump’s tax returns if they retake the House, multiple legislators told The Hill on Friday.
Democrats claim that existing law allows the tax-writing congressional committee to gain access to the president’s tax history, and have vowed to do so if they regain control of the panels.
"The American public has the right to know whether or not a president is serving his interests, or the public’s interests," minority whip Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told the Hill. "I think that’s something that was pretty well accepted before this president came along."
"I don’t think there’s any question about it," said Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky., the ranking Democrat on the House Budget Committee.
"I’m definitely going to bring it up if we don’t have them by then — that’s a definite," said Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., who sits on the Ways and Means Committee. Another member of that panel, Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., added that "of course" they will fight to see Trump’s tax returns.
"That’s part of cleaning up Washington, D.C.," said Chu. "The appetite is there."
