House Democrats are now looking at a possible move to censure President Donald Trump instead of starting impeaching proceedings, The Hill is reporting.

Censuring Trump is essentially a public reprimand of the president. Unlike impeachment, it does not carry a threat of removal from office. And unlike impeachment, which requires Senate support, the House would be able to censure the president even without any Republican support, according to The Hill.

“The advantage of that is it can be done with the House,” Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said. “We can hold the president accountable and say that his actions are unethical, and he’s engaged in blatant misconduct and that there can be some accountability for future presidents.

“It’s a permanent mark on the president’s record.”

Supporters of the move say it would send a message that Democrats are seriously keeping a check on executive misconduct, according to The Hill.

The Congressional Black Caucus has been pushing for a censure resolution. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., floated the idea after the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she is not ruling anything out, but wants the House investigations to continue.

The Hill noted that the only president to have been formally censured was Andrew Jackson in 1834.

Columnist Peggy Noonan had written last week in The Wall Street Journal: “Congressional censure would be a formal registering not of Congress’s political disapproval, but its moral disapproval.”

Trump called her a “simplistic writer for Trump haters.”
