Democrats in Congress have begun donating the campaign contributions they've received from film producer Harvey Weinstein, who was recently revealed to have been accused of sexual harassment, The New York Times reports.
Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico all pledged to donate money equal to the amounts they received from Weinstein, who has contributed to liberal candidates and causes for decades.
The Times published a report on Thursday that "found previously undisclosed allegations against Mr. Weinstein stretching over nearly three decades," after examining emails, internal documents from his businesses, and interviewing current and former employees. The producer "reached at least eight settlements with women," including two as recently as 2015.
"I appreciate the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it," Weinstein told the Times in a statement. "Though I'm trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go."
Republicans quickly pounced on their rival party, just one year after Democrats attacked them for President Donald Trump's comments about women.
"If the Democratic Party purports itself to be the champion of women, they ought to lead by example in returning or donating the donations received from Harvey Weinstein," Alexandra Smith, the head of GOP opposition research group America Rising PAC, told the paper.
