President Donald Trump's allies told Axios on Friday they think Trump will benefit from Democrats calling him a white supremacist in the upcoming 2020 election.
The president's allies, including an unnamed Trump campaign official, said they think Democrats will alienate Republicans with the accusation, and Trump's base is becoming emboldened by the charge.
"They're trying to make the case that anyone who supports this president is a racist," the official said. "They’re talking about [nearly] half the country."
Multiple Democrats running for the presidential nomination have described Trump as a white supremacist, or said he supports them.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said, "yes," when asked if Trump is a white supremacist, according to The New York Times. She added Trump "has talked about white supremacists as fine people. He's done everything he can to stir up racial conflict and hatred in this country."
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said he believes Trump is "a white supremacist or a white nationalist," when asked on CNN.
Trump, following two mass shootings over the weekend, Monday denounced "racism, bigotry, and white supremacy," calling them "sinister ideologies" that "must be defeated."
