President Barack Obama is set to hold two fundraisers in Los Angeles this week in hopes of bringing in money to take at least one chamber of Congress from Republican control,
The Hill reports.
Democrats are optimistic of their chances of taking back the Senate, where Republicans have 24 members running for re-election. Many of them are in states won by Obama.
Their chances aren't as good in the House, but they feel that even there they could win several seats if current presidential front-runner Donald Trump secures the GOP nomination.
"Now there can actually be talk of making significant gains in the House and reclaiming of the Senate," Democratic political strategist Donna Bojarsky told The Hill. "This wasn’t the case six months ago, but now it’s clear that the down-ballot races are going to be influenced by the presidential election — and not for the good of the Republicans."
The first fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will be held Thursday night at the home of Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn and his wife Cindy. Co-chairs and co-hosts include Norman and Lyn Lear; Barbra Streisand and James Brolin; director J.J. Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath; consulting firm head Andy Spahn and his wife Jennifer Perry; and Peg Yorkin.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Ben Ray Luján also will attend.
Dinner is $15,000-per-couple with $33,400 a couple gaining a co-host listing. A $66,800 donation gets access to a VIP reception with Obama.
Friday morning, a breakfast fundraiser benefitting the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will be held at the home of actor Tobey Maguire and wife Jennifer Meyer Maguire. Tickets are $33,400 per couple.
Obama will then do more fundraising in San Francisco.
Obama held a private meeting with Hollywood elites, including Horn, in mid-February.
