Poll: Tim Kaine Holds 23-Point Lead Over GOP Challenger Stewart

Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine is leading Republican challenger Corey Stewart 49-26 percent among likely voters in Virginia’s Senate race, according to a new poll by L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Five percent of voters favor Libertarian candidate Matt Waters and 20 percent were undecided.

Here are highlights from the survey:

• 66 percent of Republicans back Stewart; 3 percent back Kaine; 10 percent support Waters and 20 percent are undecided
• 3 percent of Democrats support Stewart; 88 percent back Kaine; 1 percent back Waters and 8 percent are undecided
• 11 percent of independents back Stewart; 25 percent back Kaine; 8 percent favor Waters and 57 percent are undecided
• 51 percent of all those surveyed said they would prefer to see Democrats in control of Congress, compared to 32 percent who favored the Republicans

The poll, conducted July 10-30, surveyed 802 likely voters. The margin of error is 3.59 percent.
