Corey Stewart, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Virginia, said Monday the Civil War was fought over states’ rights, not slavery.

"If you look at the history, that’s not what it meant at all, and I don’t believe the Civil War was ultimately fought over the issue of slavery," Stewart said in an interview on The Hill TV.

A historical perspective is key, Stewart said. "We have to put ourselves in the shoes of the people who were fighting at that time and from their perspective, they saw it as a federal intrusion of the state… they didn’t fight to preserve the institution of slavery," Stewart said.

The candidate said in The Hill TV interview that it was "political correctness run amuck" to change the names of buildings named for Confederates. Stewart was referring to the renaming of a Richmond, Va., elementary school from J.E.B. Stuart Elementary to Barack Obama Elementary School, TV station WTVR reported on June 19.

"I’m not opposed to somebody naming a school after a president of the United States, even though I don’t like Barack Obama. Don’t take the name of a historic figure off a school," Stewart said.

Stewart has been a defender of the Confederacy, using that central theme when running for governor of Virginia in 2017, The New York Times reported.

Stewart won the Republican nomination June 12, and will face incumbent Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine in the November general election.
