Democratic presidential candidate John Delaney Wednesday said his party's voters have a choice in the primary elections: They can either nominate someone with workable ideas or they can pick a candidate with "a bunch of fairy-tale economics or impossible promises, none of which will ever happen."
And if Democrats choose someone from the far left, such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren or Sen. Bernie Sanders, they'll lose the White House next year to President Donald Trump, Delaney, a former congressman, warned on Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"It's not just Elizabeth Warren, it's Bernie Sanders," said Delaney. "If you take what they're saying to an extreme, what's next? Free vacations, you know? Free housing, free everything? I mean, at some point we do have to pay for these things."
Delaney said he does think the government has a role in giving people the opportunity they deserve, such as in Detroit, where the government and private sector have worked together.
He also rejected the argument that the extreme left of his party makes when someone like him criticizes the obvious flaws in their plans and is accused of using "a Republican talking point."
"I think the same thing with Elizabeth Warren," said Delaney. "When I point out that the things she's proposing are fairy-tale economics, she says, 'Oh, you're not being ambitious enough.'"
He noted that under his own healthcare plan, he wants to create universal healthcare that still allows people to have choices.
"That actually sounds like a plan that I'll have to work incredibly hard and use every ounce of political capital to potentially get done," said Delaney. "It's just kind of a lazy and dishonest response to people who don't feel comfortable defending these kinds of crazy proposals."
