The personal information of more than 21,000 spilled out after a data breach at the Marine Corps Forces Reserve, Marine Corps Times reports.
An unencrypted email was sent to the wrong distribution list by the Defense Travel System (DTS) Monday, which contained the personal information — including bank account numbers — of 21,426 Marines, sailors and civilians, Marine Corps Times reported.
Other information leaked like social security numbers and credit cards were truncated, according to the report.
"It was very quickly noticed and email recall procedures were implemented to reduce the number of accounts that received it," Marine Forces Reserve spokesman Andrew Aranda said in a release.
The breach was a mistake and not something done intentionally or maliciously, Aranda said.
