Mattel Inc. is adding three body types to its Barbie line, including a “curvy” model, after years of criticism that the doll presents an unrealistic body image.
The new variations also include tall and petite body types, as well as different skin tones, hairstyles and outfits, the El Segundo, California-based company said in a statement Thursday.
Barbie, Mattel’s biggest brand, has fallen on hard times in recent years. Facing competition from other dolls and girl- oriented toys such as the Lego Friends line, the product’s sales tumbled 14 percent in the most recently reported quarter. Barbie’s ultrathin physique also has brought a drumbeat of criticism to the nearly 57-year-old doll.
“These new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them -- the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, global general manager of the Barbie line.
