Ernst had claimed in an interview on the Des Moines, Iowa, television station that Conway was losing her job – just two days after Trump said he would ignore a recommendation from the Office of Special Counsel to fire the White House adviser.

"Well obviously there has been a commission that has decided that's not appropriate, so she is being removed from that position," Ernst said. "But we certainly want to be working towards the good of all Americans and supporting, obviously she wants to support the president's initiative. She is an adviser, or was an adviser, but you know she used her position definitely."
Just two days earlier, Trump told television’s “Fox & Friends": "I'm not going to fire (Conway). I think she's a tremendous person, a tremendous spokesperson; she's loyal, she's a great person."
WHO-TV reported that a spokesman for Ernst later explained that she misspoke when she said Conway was leaving her position,
