Trump: 'I'm Not Going to Fire' Kellyanne Conway

By    |   Friday, 14 June 2019 12:42 PM

President Donald Trump Friday insisted he will not fire counselor Kellyanne Conway after a federal watchdog agency said she should be dismissed for repeated violations of the federal Hatch Act and that he thinks attempts are being made to "take away her right of free speech."

"No, I'm not going to fire her," Trump said during an interview on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "I think she's a tremendous person, a tremendous spokesperson; she's loyal, she's a great person."

The U.S. Office of Special Counsel accused Conway of being a "repeat offender" of the Hatch Act through her comments about Democratic presidential candidates while speaking in her official capacity in television interviews and on social media.

"Looks like they are trying to take away her right of free speech," Trump said. "It's not fair. They asked a question, I think one of them was involved with your show. You ask them a question, you ask a person a question and every time you are supposed to say I can't answer, I can't answer. She has to have the right of responding to questions. It really sounds to me like a free-speech thing."

Trump also commented that it "doesn't work that way" when asked if Conway will be encouraged not to comment about or criticize other candidates or politicians.

"Let's say I think Biden was one of the people that she was accused of criticizing," said Trump. "He criticized me, and then we criticized him or she criticized him."
