The intercontinental ballistic missile that North Korea test-fired early Wednesday broke apart as it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, a U.S. official told CNN Saturday.
Pyongyang launched the Hwasong-15 missile — and the state-run news agency touted the device as its "most powerful ICBM."
It also carried a "super-large heavy warhead" and traveled nearly 2,800 miles, the agency said.
North Korea also said that the missile could reach the "whole" U.S. mainland.
But the American official told CNN that "the North Koreans had problems with re-entry," though an analysis of the test was continuing.
The official added that the missile's failure underscored the challenges facing North Korea's weapons program.
