CNN is standing behind star anchor Chris Cuomo after a video surfaced Monday night of  him spouting profanities and threatening to throw a man down a flight of stairs for calling him "Fredo" — a reference to "The Godfather" character Fredo Corleone, the cowardly brother who was desperate for respect from his father.

"Chris Cuomo defended himself when he was verbally attacked with the use of an ethnic slur in an orchestrated setup," CNN spokesman Matt Dornic in a Twitter statement. "We completely support him."

The video went viral after a right-wing YouTube channel, "THAT'S THE POINT with Brandon" posted it, showing Cuomo threatening the man. YouTube later removed the video, saying  it violated its bullying standards.

Brandon Recor, the channel's host, told The Washington Post the man in the confrontation sent him the video. claiming he went up to Cuomo to ask for a picture.

In the video, the man insisted he thought Fredo was Cuomo's name, and the CNN host said calling someone of Italian heritage by that name was a racist slur like the "n-word."

"What are you gonna do about it?" the man asked Cuomo.

Cuomo, responding with multiple expletives, said he'd "throw you down these stairs" lika a "punk."

The man told Cuomo he "doesn’t want to do that," and Cuomo responded: "Take a swing at me. Call me Fredo."

Cuomo got some support, including from Fox News rival Sean Hannity, who tweeted Cuomo deserved an apology, and former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, who said such comments happen "all the time" and they are "quite racist."

However, Donald Trump Jr., who was called "Fredo" by CNN's Ana Navarro during an episode of Cuomo's show, tweeted a link to the video from the show and asked "does CNN’s head of PR still think ‘Fredo’ is an ethnic slur after watching this?

"Hey @ChrisCuomo, take it from me, ‘Fredo’ isn’t the N word for Italians, it just means you’re the dumb brother," Trump. Jr. said. Dornic responded by commenting "Speaking of dumb brothers... cc: @EricTrump."

His father, the president, jumped in later in the morning, tweeting: "I thought Chris was Fredo also. The truth hurts. Totally lost it! Low ratings @CNN."

He followed up with another tweet:

"Would Chris Cuomo be given a Red Flag for his recent rant? Filthy language and a total loss of control. He shouldn’t be allowed to have any weapon. He’s nuts!"

Several Trump campaign officials jumped on Cuomo for making the comparison between "Fredo" and the n-word.

"The N word is a dehumanizing word used against blacks who endured years of oppression," tweeted Katrina Pierson, a Trump campaign spokesperson. "Fredo is a term from The Godfather, referring to the dumb brother. Equivocating the two is pure racism."
