Citizens United sued the National Archives Wednesday to obtain information about how it reviewed emails from Hillary Clinton that the State Department had once deemed personal and kept from public view.

The conservative nonprofit group filed the lawsuit in a U.S. District Court in Washington under the Freedom of Information Act seeking "any and all correspondence, schedules, memoranda, attendee lists, and any other records related to the planning, attendance, and methodology" used during the review, The Washington Free Beacon reports.

Last spring, the National Archives reviewed 1,246 Clinton emails that the State Department had deemed were "personal" and should not be publicly released, the Free Beacon reports.

The Archives in May endorsed the State Department's recommendation that the emails were not related to official business.

Citizens United sued after the National Archives failed to respond to a public records request submitted in June, the Free Beacon reports.

On Monday, the group sued the State Department, seeking information about Clinton's schedule during her years at the nation's top diplomat.

"This is a narrow [FOIA] request, so it shouldn't be taking months and months to get documents," David Bossie, president of Citizens United, told the Free Beacon. "The American people have a right to inspect these records in a timely fashion."

Clinton is scheduled to testify Thursday on the email scandal before the special House committee investigating the 2012 Benghazi attacks that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens and two former Navy SEALs.
