Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., will lead a group of Democratic members of Congress on a trip to the southern border to “investigate, inspect and evaluate the latest conditions at these facilities.”
Schumer made the announcement on the Senate floor on Thursday, saying that he will report back on what he finds to the Senate and the public. An aide told Politico that at least a dozen Democrats will make the trip.
"The last few months, Americans have seen for themselves the awful conditions that migrant children are enduring at the southern border. Faultless kids, many traveling alone and many very young, are subject to inhumane conditions without the proper healthcare, nutrition, hygiene or space," Schumer said on Thursday. "No one should want to see these kids treated so inhumanely. All they're doing is fleeing for a better life."
Vice President Mike Pence recently made a trip to the southern border following reports, including one from the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General, of overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in border facilities.
