Gov. Sununu: Will Vote for Trump If He's GOP Nominee

By    |   Thursday, 11 January 2024 10:12 AM EST

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who is supporting former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary, said he will vote for Donald Trump if the former president is the party's nominee.

Sununu appeared Wednesday night on CNN and was asked if he would vote for Trump if the former president were "a convicted felon."

Trump currently is facing charges in four criminal cases.

"I think right now, most of America looks like they would vote for him because he's winning – [President Joe] Biden is so bad that Trump is actually beating Biden in most polls," Sununu said. "So most of America is right there."

Pressed to answer for himself, Sununu didn't hesitate.

"I'm gonna support the Republican nominee, absolutely. Yeah, like, that shouldn't shock anybody," he said. "That shouldn't be a surprise to anybody that the Republican governor, and most, actually, of America, is going to end up going against Biden because they need to see a change in this country."

Surveys show Trump currently is the clear front-runner in the Republican presidential primary race.

Haley, though, has moved within single digits of the former president in New Hampshire. She could be helped even more by former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's withdrawal from the race on Wednesday.

"Have the issues around the election changed the dynamics of the Republican primary? No. It's not an issue with the Republican base right now. It's just not," Sununu said of Trump's trials, "and clearly not one that's holding the American public at large back because, again, Trump is up one point."

Sununu was asked by CNN if Trump could win, with CNN again invoking the "convicted felon" line.

"Yes. The polls say yes," Sununu said. "People know that. The four court cases that are out there, we'll see kind of where they are, but right now, they're not playing into whether folks would vote for Trump or not.

"I can be as surprised about that as you, but that's just where it is right now. That's a fact. Look at the polls. The data is clear. It's not just one poll. It's poll, after poll, after poll that shows Trump at least would be within that margin of error."
