'Medicine Hunter' Travels the World to Find Natural Cures

By    |   Friday, 05 December 2014 01:32 PM EST

Chris Kilham has been called the David Attenborough of natural medicine. As an ethnobotanist, he has spent a lifetime traveling the world in search of medicinal plants that can treat everything from depression to heart disease to diabetes.

On this week’s edition of “Meet The Doctors” on Newsmax TV, Kilham showcases some of the most effective scientifically verified natural remedies he has identified in his travels — including garlic, ginseng, and other more exotic botanicals.

“We have gotten our treatments from the Earth for all of history — up until about 1940,” he explains. “We have thousands of medicinal plants that are lifesavers that are the basis of modern pharmacy that are used widely in hospitals all over the world. [And] I’m totally in favor of keeping that trend going.”

To view a complete report on Chris Kilham, and other health news, tune in Saturday, Dec. 6, at 7 and 11 a.m. (EST) to Newsmax TV’s Meet the Doctors program, at NewsmaxTV.com, or DIRECTV Ch. 349 and DISH Ch. 223.

Kilham has worked with many major companies and health-based organizations to develop, popularize, and market traditional plant-based food and medicinal products. As best-selling author, he has also written extensively about new treatments, therapies, and health-boosting foods derived from herbs, plants, and trees.

“We’ve co-evolved with plants so we metabolize their compounds,” he notes. “We know how to take them into our bodies and utilize them. We and plants are virtually inseparable on this planet.”

Kilham explains that plant-derived therapies are often less-risky alternatives to synthetic drugs, most of which carry potentially dangerous side effects.

“Plants are safer medicines,” he says. “Every year about 200,000 or more Americans die from the proper use of over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Most years, not one American dies from herbs.

“They have a longer history of use and they have as many scientific papers [supporting their effectiveness] published as drugs do.”

In addition to the segment on Kilham, this week’s “Meet The Doctors” features a guide to how baby boomers can boost bone health, prevent fractures, and lower their risks for osteoporosis, with Lani Simpson, M.D.
