A senior member of the Congressional Black Caucus said Monday he will introduce a resolution to censure Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, over his history of "rabid, racist remarks."

In a statement, Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., called on Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., "to withhold from Steve King the privilege of serving on any committee until he apologizes for his racism."

"Steve King's despicable comments harken back to the dark days of American history where his rabid, racist remarks would have been acceptable to a significant portion of our nation. This must come to a screeching halt right now," Rush stated, adding, "Anything short of censure would be shallow."

King ignited a firestorm of criticism when he asked during The New York Times interview, "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?"

McCarthy promised Sunday "action will be taken" against King for language that "has no place in America."
