CDC Investigates Queen Victoria Outbreak

By    |   Thursday, 08 February 2024 02:13 PM EST

The CDC released an update Tuesday on its investigation of an outbreak on the Queen Victoria luxury cruise ship that has infected 141 passengers and crew members, nearly 10% of the ship's occupancy.

There are 1,824 passengers and 967 crew members on the ship in total, according to the CDC.

The Cunard Cruise Line voyage V405 departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Jan. 22 and was to dock in San Francisco on Wednesday.

In response to the outbreak, ill passengers were isolated, and increased cleaning and disinfection procedures were taken "according to the ship's outbreak prevention and response plan," the CDC said.

The predominant symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting, the CDC said. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, according to the CDC.

"Cunard confirmed that a small number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria," Cunard Cruise Line, which operates Queen Victoria, said in a statement to NBC News. "They immediately activated their enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all guests and crew on board.

"Measures have been effective."

The ship departed San Francisco on Wednesday for Hawaii, about a month into its 107-night world tour.

Cunard said in a statement to Newsmax: "Cunard confirms that a number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria on voyage V405, which departed Florida on 22 January and arrived in San Francisco on 7 February.  They immediately activated their enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all guests and crew on board, and these measures have been effective."
