U.S. intelligence has alerted joint terrorism task forces that al-Qaida could be planning attacks one day before the election, according to CBS News.
Sources told CBS News that New York, Texas, and Virginia are all possible targets, although no specific locations were mentioned.
Intelligence is still being assessed and the credibility of the reports has not been confirmed, but sources said alerts went out to counterterrorism officials as a precaution, CBS News reports.
"The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States. The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety," a senior FBI official told CBS News.
Intelligence about possible terror attack threats always increases during holiday seasons and in the run-up to major national events, CBS News reports.
