Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., on Tuesday suggested that House Republicans should submit a motion to vacate the House Speaker’s seat held by Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., The Hill reports.
The legislator, during a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, suggested that since a Democrat Congress member voted for Pelosi to be Speaker after testing positive for the coronavirus, they should argue that Pelosi put other members of the House at risk by allowing her to vote.
Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., voted for Pelosi in-person six days after announcing that she had tested positive for the coronavirus, saying that she “has worked with doctors and is safe to travel” before the vote, and said she had been approved by the Capitol’s attending physician.
Several House Republicans signed a letter to Pelosi on Tuesday criticizing the decision to allow Moore to vote in-person.
“The opening day of the 117th Congress was the latest example of medical guidance being thrown out the window in favor of what is politically convenient,” they wrote. “The detailed guidance on the logistics for January 3rd issued at your direction by the House Sergeant at Arms and Attending Physician were completely abandoned. Despite the science not changing, the guidelines we operated under for your election as Speaker did.”
