A Catholic bishop has told graduating students that part of their mission is "to make the voice of reason heard in our culture" – but "often that means you have to be politically incorrect."
In his commencement address to seniors at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, Bishop Robert Morlino of the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin, urged them to "make the voice of reason heard in our culture" amid "the darkness of our world."
"So, let's be politically incorrect, like St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of political incorrectness . . ." Morlino said.
"If you speak the truth, you might not be safe. Those who speak truth to a culture where everyone is looking to be offended will be persecuted . . . So, if you're going to shine the light of reason in a dark world, you are going to need courage.
"To quote St. Thomas . . . 'Courage denotes a certain firmness of mind in bearing and withstanding those things wherein it is most difficult to be firm.' In other words, courage makes you discouragement-proof."
