If you ask our neighbors to the north what they think of the 2016 presidential election, Canadians are downright worried, a new poll reveals.
Sixty-five percent of the 1,524 Canadian voters surveyed by the international polling firm Leger say they are fearful of Donald Trump getting elected president, while only 23 say they aren't.
Asked who will win the general election this November, Canadians said:
- Hillary Clinton, 55 percent
- Donald Trump, 19 percent
- Bernie Sanders, 11 percent
- Ted Cruz, 4 percent
- Jeb Bush, 3 percent
Canadians also had the most favorable view of Clinton — 54 percent. Trump is in second place with 13 percent.
Seventy percent said they have a poor opinion of Trump, while 24 percent give Clinton low marks.
The poll, sponsored by the newspapers
Le Journal de Montréal and
Le Devoir and reported in the U.S. by
Politico, also asked about Cruz, whose eligibility for office has been questioned by Trump and others because he was born in Canada.
Some 14 percent said they have a good opinion of him. Another 22 percent have a poor opinion. And thirty-six percent said they don't know him.
The poll, conducted Feb. 1-4, has an overall margin of error is plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.
