George W Bush Had Back Surgery in January

By    |   Thursday, 11 April 2013 06:24 PM EDT

Former President George W. Bush underwent back surgery and spent much of January recuperating, National Journal reports.

Bush is doing well and will be able to attend the opening of his presidential library in Dallas on April 25, according to the report.

Two sources close to Bush told National Journal that the former president had the surgery to deal with a disc problem “several months ago.” He and former first lady Laura Bush spent January in Florida where they watched baseball spring training.

The sources said that doctors told Bush to stop playing golf while he healed, but he managed to get in some putting and chipping while in Florida. He also has been recently seen on the course in Dallas.

“He has a tendency to overdo it, but he does love his golf,” one source told National Journal.

Bush’s father, former President George H.W. Bush, had a more serious health scare at about the same time. Around Christmas, the elder Bush, 88, was hospitalized in Houston for pneumonia and an infection. He has since recovered and is expected to attend his son’s library dedication along with former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama.
