Seventy percent of respondents in a new
Washington Post/ABC News poll say suspected Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should be put to death if convicted.
At the same time, 74 percent of 1,000 adults surveyed said they support the decision to try the 19-year-old Tsarnaev in the federal court system opposed to a military trial.
Among Republicans, 84 percent support the death penalty for Tsarnaev, while 69 percent independents surveyed said they also favor death for the young man if convicted of the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15. Among Democrats, 64 percent said they thought Tsarnaev should be sentenced to death as well.
Among African-Americans, 52 percent support the death penalty in the case, while 75 percent of whites took the same view. Among Hispanics, 62 percent of respondents were in favor of the putting Tsarnaev to death if convicted.
Support for a civilian trial instead of a military tribunal was overwhelming in the survey taken April 24-28, with Republicans, independents, and Democrats all agreeing by wide margins that Tsarnaev should be tried by a jury of his peers in the federal court system..
