W.Va. Sen. Rockefeller Seeks U.S. Probe of News Corp. Phone Hacking

By    |   Wednesday, 13 July 2011 08:07 AM EDT

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., called on U.S. agencies to investigate News Corp. newspapers amid allegations of phone hacking in the United Kingdom.

“I am concerned that the admitted phone hacking in London by the News Corp. may have extended to 9/11 victims or other Americans,” Rockefeller said in a statement posted on the website of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, which he chairs. “If they did, the consequences will be severe.”

The alleged hacking "is offensive and a serious breach of journalistic ethics," Rockefeller said.

"This raises serious questions about whether the company has broken U.S. law, and I encourage the appropriate agencies to investigate to ensure that Americans have not had their privacy violated."
