BMW is "absolutely" committed to a new plant in Mexico despite President-elect Donald Trump's threats to impose a border tax on companies that make cars in Mexico for the US market, the BBC reported on Monday.
"I don't think there's any discussion that BMW is not at home in the United States. Yes we are building a plant in Mexico," BMW sales and marketing director Ian Robertson told the BBC.
"Yes we built a plant in Brazil last year. Yes we are building plants in other parts of the world as our capacity increases. But that's part of a normal strategic manufacturing direction."
Robertson said BMW's new factory in San Luis Potosi, Mexico will make the company's 3 Series cars for sale across North America.
He added that the luxury carmaker was also investing $1 billion in its plant in South Carolina and said the company was the biggest exporter of cars, in terms of value, from the U.S.
During the electoral campaign, Trump suggested an import tax of 35 percent for companies who manufacture outside of the U.S. and since being elected president has kept up the pressure on firms not to move their production abroad, Fortune reports.
Just last week Trump vowed in a tweet to impose a "big border tax" on General Motors for making its Chevrolet Cruze model in Mexico and made a similar threat to Toyota.
