Former Vice President Joe Biden said the Trump administration did not make fighting cancer a priority despite his efforts to convince it to do so, Yahoo News is reporting.
His remarks came Tuesday night during a speech to the National Minority Quality Forum’s Annual Summit on Health Disparities.
Biden had directed a national “Cancer Moonshot” initiative in 2016 and said he encouraged President Donald Trump’s team to build off his efforts. Biden’s son, Beau, had died of cancer in 2015 at the age of 46.
“What happened was, we did a lot of good work with your help on the Moonshot,” Biden said. “And when we left, I went to this administration and said, ‘You can do a lot. Move.’ But it wasn’t their priority at the time.”
Biden, who is expected to announce his candidacy for president in the coming weeks, has been heavily involved with the Biden Cancer Initiative since leaving office. He called it “the cause of my life.”
“We can, must and are able to do something about it," Biden said of the battle against cancer. "It’s within our power."
