Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., will be asked to officially affirm he is a Democrat, the Washington Examiner is reporting.
The request from the Democratic National Committee is being made to all those seeking the party nomination. Sanders, however, is the only independent, who is an announced candidate for the party nomination.
All candidates will have to sign a “candidate affirmation form,” a DNC official told the Examiner.
"Candidates who have officially announced their candidacy will have a week to return a signed copy of the affirmation form to the DNC," the official said. "As any additional candidates enter the race, they will be provided with the same information and will be required to return the form in the same time frame."
Under new party rules, a presidential candidate must “be a bona fide Democrat.”
Sanders caucuses with Democratic lawmakers. He will sign the pledge and will run as a Democrat and serve as one if elected, Jeff Weaver, a senior campaign adviser told CNN.
