In a move to determine whether President Barack Obama was playing politics in his account of the Benghazi attack, the Republican National Committee has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for emails between the Obama re-election campaign and the State Department dealing with the issue.
According to an RNC press release issued Thursday, the move is intended to "uncover the truth about why the Obama administration was not honest and forthcoming with the American people about the attacks in Benghazi."

The request to the State Department asks for emails and documents between department employees and the campaign staff that might have been written between Sept. 11, when the attack took place, and Nov. 7. It covers anything with the words "Libya" or "Benghazi."
"Americans need to know whether the State Department had any contact with the staff of the president's re-election campaign as talking points on Benghazi were drafted and edited," said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.
"We certainly hope political considerations didn't come into play when the administration decided what to tell the American people, but the administration's changing answers certainly raise valid concerns that we don't know the full story."
He added, "Assuming there was no contact between the State Department and the campaign, this should be an easy request to fill."
