Two baseball coaches at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School won't be rehired for the next school year because of what they did not do during the deadly shooting at the Parkland, Florida school in February.
Andrew Medina and David Taylor are assistant coaches for the school's baseball program and were criticized for not doing enough to stop 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, who police said entered the school and fatally shot 17 people.
According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Broward County School District Superintendent Robert Runcie decided not to offer them positions for the upcoming school year.
Medina was an unarmed campus monitor whose job involved keeping watch along the perimeter of the school and confronting and/or reporting any threats. He was the first person to see Cruz enter the campus on Feb. 14, the day of the shooting, and did not relay his concerns that Cruz could be preparing to shoot up the school even though he had previously concluded that the teen could someday do just that.
Medina called Taylor on the radio and told him to watch out for a "suspicious kid" who was about to enter the school. Cruz was carrying a duffel bag and had his head down. He began to run when Medina drove his golf cart in his direction.
Taylor, according to a separate Sun Sentinel story, arrived at the floor of the building where police said Cruz was loading his weapon. After hearing gunfire erupt, Taylor ran into a janitor's closet to hide.
Outside the building as gunshots sounded, Medina picked up school resource officer Scot Peterson in his golf cart and the pair tried to figure out what was happening amid the chaos.
Peterson also has been criticized for not entering the school and confronting the shooter. He retired a short time after the shooting.
Two 17-year-old girls at Stoneman Douglas — including one of the victims of the Valentine's Day shooting — accused Medina of sexual harassment in February 2017. He was suspended for three days over the incident.
The massacre sent shockwaves through the nation and kicked off a renewed effort geared at gun control and school safety.
