Sen. John Barrasso said Wednesday he supports President Donald Trump's efforts to bring troops home from Syria, but still believes the move must be taken as safely as possible.

"We don't want ISIS to be able to raise its ugly head again," the Wyoming Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "We need to fight them so we don't need to fight them here. We have done a great job. There is still a little more work to do."

Barrasso said he believes the president is listening to the call for caution, as he's made the announcement about bringing troops back but has yet set a definite date.

"It is important to leave some stay-behind troops, to make sure ISIS doesn't reform," Barrasso said.

Meanwhile, Trump said Tuesday during the State of the Union address that his administration has been holding "constructive talks" with groups in Afghanistan, including the Taliban, and Barrasso told Fox News he also thinks it is important to listen to those in the field about bringing the war to an end.

"I agree with the president, they are now coming to the table, but it is because of the force of the United States military," he said. "We have rebuilt our military. We are strong, we are effective. You see it not just there but you see it around the world."

Trump also commented that great nations don't fight endless wars, but Barrasso noted that sometimes great nations "are attacked endlessly, and we need to continue to protect ourselves, our borders, and our nation."
