Sen. Baldwin: 'We Will Rue the Day' If Trump Declares Emergency

Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., said Monday that the nation “will rue the day” if President Donald Trump declares a national emergency to secure funding for a wall on the Southwest border.

Trump has insisted that he has “the absolute right to declare a national emergency” to get the money needed for a wall without having to negotiate with Congress, which did not include the funding in the budget bill that ended the partial government shutdown.

“I think everyone’s clear that's going to get litigated, not the question necessarily of whether his opinion of an emergency is the same as other people's, but we will rue the day when we let a president start taking money for one purpose, declaring an emergency and using it for another,” Baldwin said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday.

“I'm sure there are many Republicans shaking in their boots about that happening with a future Democratic president.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reportedly cautioned Trump against declaring an emergency during a private meeting at the White House last Tuesday, saying that Congress could pass a resolution opposing an emergency declaration, according to The Washington Post.
