Federal prosecutors are considering whether to bring child pornography charges against former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of former Hillary Clinton top aide Huma Abedin, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The possible charges relate to Weiner's sexting a 15-year-old girl last year.

Both the FBI and U.S. attorney's office are investigating, and the shamed congressman's electronic devices — including a cell phone and a laptop — have been seized as part of the probe, the Journal reported.

The FBI investigation of Weiner rocked the 2016 presidential race when the agency discovered new communications on Weiner's devices – calling them possibly pertinent to its investigation of Clinton's private email server.

FBI Director James Comey several days later then announced nothing new was found.

According to the Journal, Weiner's lawyers had met with federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

A possible child pornography charge carries a 15-year mandatory minimum prison sentence; according to the Journal, Weiner allegedly solicited explicit images from the girl.

Prosecutors are also believed to be weighing a receipt of child pornography charge, which carries a five-year mandatory minimum sentence, and a possession of child pornography charge, which has no minimum sentence, the Journal reported.

The U.K.-based Daily Mail reported last September that Weiner was exchanging sexual messages with the teen over several months, sending bare-chested photos of himself to the girl, commenting on her body and discussing sexual acts with her.
