NBC News chairman Andy Lack says President Donald Trump’s criticism of NBC News does get to him at times and "it’s more intense than anything I’ve ever experienced."

"It's disconcerting for sure, but we're not in a popularity contest, so we’re used to being in conflict whether it’s with the White House or the administration," Lack said Monday at media forum held at New York University and co- sponsored by the NYU Social Entrepreneurship Program and Axios.

"It’s more intense than anything I’ve ever experienced … it’s an out-of-body experience at times, when you're being tweeted about or attacked in the way the president does . . .

"People get pissed off at us. We should expect to have the lowest approval ratings on some level, if you're doing your job in this climate."

Lack also said the Trump administration has been a boon for investigative reporting.

"We're entering what for me as a journalist feels like a new golden age. I didn't ever think I'd get a swing like this in these times," he said.

Asked by Jim VandeHei, co-founder and CEO of Axios, what he would ask Trump if he could give him truth serum, Lack replied: "What is it with you and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin? What’s going on between the two of you?"

Lack added: "I think [Putin] has a remote relationship with the truth. I think the president has a somewhat distant relationship with truth, as it relates to us as reporters. And I think he plays with us. And I think Putin plays with us. And in that sense, I think they have common ground."

Along with ABC News, CBS News, CNN and The New York Times, NBC News has been referred to by Trump as "The Fake News Media."

Trump also personally went after Lack following the firing of NBC "Today" show star Matt Lauer:
