Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is urging ex-congressional candidate and former fighter pilot Amy McGrath to run against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in 2020, Politico reports.
McGrath, a retired Marine lieutenant colonel, narrowly lost her race against Rep. Andy Barr. R-Ky., last year in the 6th District but was one of the top fundraisers in the cycle, hauling in $770,000 compared to just $300,000 raised by Barr.
Schumer pitched the idea to run against McConnell during a sit-down with McGrath last month.
McConnell's re-election prospects are on shaky ground, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson David Bergstein said last month, following a poll that showed the lawmaker with a lower favorability rating than any other congressional leader.
"A pack of bloodhounds couldn't find a voter who likes Sen. McConnell," Bergstein said. "He's driven America into the longest government shutdown in history, pushed a healthcare agenda that slashes coverage for preexisting conditions and he wants to cut Medicare and Social Security so he can give his rich, powerful friends another tax break."
McConnell's team has already started scrutinizing McGrath, including her failed run for office in 2018.
